L’ESULTANZA DI DON ABBONDIO

Don Abbondio apprende con gran sollievo che don Rodrigo è morto e si
lascia andare ad affermazioni poco lusinghiere sul suo conto.
“- Ah! è morto dunque! è proprio andato! – esclamò don Abbondio. –
Vedete, figliuoli, se la Provvidenza arriva alla fine certa gente. Sapete che l’è
una gran cosa! un gran respiro per questo povero paese! che non ci si poteva
vivere con colui. E stata un gran flagello questa peste, ma è anche stata
una scopa; ha spazzato via certi soggetti, che, figliuoli miei, non ce ne
liberavamo più:
Non lo vedremo più andare in giro con quegli sgherri dietro, con
quell’albagia, con quell’aria, con quel palo in corpo, con quel guardar la
gente, che pareva che si stesse tutti al mondo per sua degnazione. Intanto,
lui non c’è più, e noi ci siamo. Non manderà più di quell’imbasciate ai
galantuomini. Ci ha dato un gran fastidio a tutti, vedete: ché adesso lo
possiamo dire.”
Don Abbondio è uomo che vive nella paura, ma alla notizia che il signorotto è
morto per davvero e non tornerà mai più in paese a dettar legge con l’aiuto di
amici potenti e violenti scagnozzi, tutti caduti vittime della peste, tutte le sue
paure svaniscono e si dimostra disponibile a sposare i due promessi nella
chiesa del paese.

AND FINALLY HE IS DEAD

Don Abbondio learns with great relief that Don Rodrigo is dead and lets himself go to unflattering statements about him.
“- Ah! he is then dead! he’s really gone! exclaimed Don Abbondio. “You see, children, if Providence comes to an end some people. You know it’s a great thing! a big breath for this poor country! that we could not live with him. ”
“This plague was a great scourge; but it has also been a broom; it has wiped out certain subjects, who, my childrenwe would never get rid oft hem ”
“He will not send more such embassy to the gentlemen. He has given us all a great annoyance,now you see: now we can say it. ”
All his fears vanish at this news and he shows his willingness to marry the two betrothed in the village church

UND SCHLIEßLICH IST ER TOT

Don Abbondio erfährt mit großer Erleichterung, dass Don Rodrigo tot ist und lässt sich auf wenig schmeichelhafte Äußerungen über ihn ein.
„- Ach! er ist also tot! es ist wirklich weg! rief Don Abbondio. „Seht ihr, Kinder, wenn die Vorsehung mit einigen Menschen zu Ende geht. Du weißt, es ist eine großartige Sache! ein großer Atemzug für dieses arme Land! dass du nicht mit ihm leben könntest. ”
„Diese Plage war eine große Geißel; aber es war auch ein Besen; es hat bestimmte Untertanen ausgelöscht, die, meine Kinder, nicht mehr frei von ihnen waren: ”
„Er wird nicht mehr als diese Botschaft zu den Herren schicken. Es hat uns alle gestört, sehen Sie: weil wir es jetzt sagen können. ”
Alle seine Ängste verschwinden bei dieser Nachricht und er zeigt sich bereit, die beiden in der Kirche des Landes zu heiraten

ET ENFIN IL EST MORT

Don Abbondio apprend avec un énorme soulagement que Don Rodrigo est mort et il se lâche enfin avec des affirmations peu flatteuses à son égard.
« Ah ! Il est mort donc ! Il est vraiment parti ! – s’exclama don Abbondio. « Vous voyez, mes enfants, que la Providence arrive à la fin pour certaines personnes. Sachez que c’est une grande chose ! Un grand répit pour ce pauvre pays ! Car on ne pouvait vivre point avec celui-là …..
Ça a été un grand fléau, cette peste ; mais elle a été aussi un balai; elle a balayé certains individus desquels, chères enfants, nous n’aurons pas pu nous en débarrasser ……..
Il n’enverra plus de ces fameuses missives aux gentils hommes. Il nous a causé tant d’ennuis à tous, voyez-vous : et maintenant nous pouvons le dire. »
À cette nouvelle, toutes ses peurs s’évaporent et il se montre tout disposé à marier les deux jeunes promis à l’église du village.
